I received my Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins in 2006. I took a course on transportation safety where we focused on designing roads for safety, making airlines safer, and decreasing the risk of medical helicopter crashes. In 2007, I worked for Public Citizen, Ralph Nader's consumer advocacy group. Ralph's book, Unsafe at Any Speed, forced the automobile industry to focus on converting their cars from steel death traps to smart machines teeming with airbags, safety belts, and crumple zones. As a result, millions of lives have been saved all over the world and automobile companies now advertise and compete based on safety. And in just the last fifteen years, our highways have gotten much safer: But what struck me most in my public health training was the deep codependent relationship public health has with the medical world. Understandably so, public health has traditionally been mostly about epidemiology, biostatistics, and medical services. In fact, the accepted definition of public health is:

"the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals."

But the next generation of Public Health won't involve the medical world. We're currently seeing large companies like Google enter the health space. Google Health believes that "better health comes from better information" and "you should have easy access to your own health information - anytime, anywhere." While this is a worthy mission, Google is very much missing the mark. I'm not aware of any evidence that access to medical data or everyday wellness data changes long-term behaviors or a population's health outcomes. But Google is working on a much, much more important initiative that, if successful, could be one of the greatest contributions to public health the world has ever seen-- data-driven, crash-proof "brains on wheels"-- self-driving cars that aware of the road, of other cars, and of passengers. Built 52 new schools, refurbished 150 others and increased student enrollment by 34 percent.

Established or improved 1200 parks and playgrounds throughout the city.

Built three central and 10 neighborhood libraries.

Built 100 nurseries for children under five.

Improved life in the slums by providing water service to 100 percent of Bogotá households.

Bought undeveloped land on the outskirts of the city to prevent real estate speculation and ensured that it will be developed as affordable housing with electrical, sewage, and telephone service as well as space reserved for parks, schools, and greenways.

Established 300 kilometers of separated bikeways, the largest network in the developing world.

Created the world’s longest pedestrian street, 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) crossing much of the city as well as a 45- kilometer (28 miles) greenway along a path that had been originally slated for an eight-lane highway.

The new Volvo S60 features pedestrian tracking:

We've recently espied some new video detailing Volvo's pedestrian detection system, and while some of this info has been out for a while now we figure it's certainly more than cool enough to warrant a quick look. According to a freshly minted press release, the technology is being featured on the upcoming S60, which -- in addition to the newest in collision detection and auto-braking -- can spot pedestrians who step in front of the car, warn the driver, and automatically apply full braking power if the driver does not respond in time. Vehicles traveling under 22 MPH should be able to come to a complete stop, while anything traveling faster than that will see its speed significantly reduced.

New York City saw an all-time record low for traffic fatalities in 2009. In fact, only 12 bicyclists were killed in 2009 (down from 26 in 2008). Much of this has to do with designing an environment that's safer for all. Combining a designed environment with technology like this developed by Volvo could reduce fatalities to almost zero. But most importantly, designing safety and wellness takes careful coordination amongst a litany of players. John Thackara describes this coordination best in his excellent book, In the Bubble: Designing in a Complex World:

“Urban sprawl is not mindless at all. There is nothing inevitable about its development. Sprawl is the result of zoning laws designed by legislators, low-density buildings designed by developers, marketing strategies designed by ad agencies, tax breaks designed by economists, credit lines designed by banks, geomatics designed by retailers, data-mining software designed by hamburger chains, and automobiles designed by car designers.
